I want to emphasize the importance of early intervention for improving the breastfeeding experience for new moms. I see in my practice that I am able to help the moms most when the intervention occurs as the milk production begins, which is between 2 to 5 days post delivery. This is so effective at this stage because I am able to teach them proper breastfeeding technique from the beginning thus eliminating incorrect breastfeeding patterns. These can include improper position and latch, infrequent feeding, lack of sustained sucking and repeatedly falling off the breast. These poor habits can cause sore nipples and a need for prolonged nipple shield use if not a complete cessation of breastfeeding.

To increase the chances of early breastfeeding success and minimize the possibility of readmission for dehydration, hypernatremia and hyperbilirubinemia, etc.,  mothers should seek assistance upon discharge from the hospital.
